Choosing a therapist is usually a daunting task—where does one begin? I would like to make the process a bit easier by telling you about myself and the way in which I conduct therapy sessions with my clients.

Let me begin by telling you that I see therapy as a partnership or a collaborative process between myself and each individual. My therapeutic style is interactive, eclectic and non-judgmental; I am direct without being confrontational and am also an attentive and perceptive listener. I have a great deal of respect for my clients as well as the belief that I can help each person find new possibilities within themselves. For example, in a recent session, Bill was feeling defeated and hopeless. As we explored the issues, he was able to step back and see his situation from a different perspective. By the time we had finished, he was able to see more possibilities and to feel hopeful.

I utilize a holistic approach which includes several areas of specialization: psychodynamic and cognitive therapy, hypnotherapy and EMDR. The psychodynamic and cognitive therapies are the foundation which hold the entire treatment together and are the mainstay of most therapies, including mine. Hypnosis can be used to help a client prepare for a surgical procedure, diminish performance anxiety, reduce a fear of flying, lose weight, stop smoking as well as manage many other issues. In addition to helping people recover from trauma, EMDR can be effective with people who are stuck in treatment—they know their issues but nothing is really changing. My therapeutic style allows me to weave together the different modalities flexibly and to tailor my approach to the specific needs of each client.

So, how have my life experiences shaped me as a therapist? I was fortunate to know from a young age what I wanted to do with my life professionally. I have always had the willingness to take on challenges and have at times fallen down. These experiences have given me a respect for the pitfalls in life along with a profound belief in the power of people to grow and change.

As part of my commitment to lifelong learning, I have always sought out additional training and supervision from the best and brightest people around. Now I supervise other therapists as well as teach at an advanced training institute.
