Perhaps I can best introduce myself by mentioning the elements of change and constancy in my work as a psychotherapist from the beginning of my practice in 1979 until the present. I have been constant in my exploration of unconscious processes, in others and in myself; I have also maintained a constant interest in and a fascination with literature as both a source and expression of the richness and wonder of the human soul—the same wonder and richness that emerge in the clinical encounter. My great change as a therapist is that my primary concern is no longer with the patient as the one who is ill and must be made well, but with the relationship between therapist and patient as the environment in which the patient changes.
